Roses in Frodsham draw

Frodsham 216-7 (Eshan 51*, Charlie Sandbach 40*; Anna Page 2-28) Mersey Rose Recs 61-7 (Andrew Birkett 12*) Match drawn Scorecard

Mersey Rose's hardball team played their first game for five weeks as they fought out an eventful draw at Frodsham.

Recent rain had caused fixtures to be cancelled and, with the forecast not terribly promising, there was some doubt that play would be possible yesterday. Fortunately, the game started in conditions that were dry, if cold and windy.

Frodsham started positively but Mersey Rose made an early breakthrough when Andi Page made a diving catch off his own bowling to dismiss T Griffiths for 5. Frodsham's Eshan, coming in at number 3, asserted himself on the game almost immediately and played some fine shots on his way to an unbeaten 50 (after which he retired not out). Ian Sidebotham took the second wicket of the afternoon when Nick Corless hold out to Rob Kent at square leg.

Frodsham dominated but Mersey Rose were able to not only create chances but take them. Aaron McKenna claimed his first wicket for the hardball team when he bowled John Hope for 7, while Simon Tasker picked up the wicket of J Davies. Ian Sidebotham deputised as wicketkeeper to allow Andrew Birkett the opportunity to bowl a few overs, and the move proved an inspired one: Sidebotham held a fine catch behind the stumps off Birkett's bowling, while Anna Page dismissed Zabi and T Davies, both of whom were caught by Birkett at mid-wicket.

Frodsham reached 216 for 7 from 30 overs - a formidable target but Mersey Rose were pleased with their bowling and the way they took catching opportunities.

The target always looked beyond them but the visitors batted sensibly in worsening conditions. No-one gave up their wicket easily and Andrew Birkett in particular played positively. As the rain became heavy, play had to be abandoned with a draw as the outcome.

MRRCC Player of the Match: Anna Page. After a nightmare first over, which went for 14 runs, she bowled three superb overs to finish with 2-28.
