Signs of improvement despite defeat
Softball team lose at Fleetwood Hesketh despite positive performance
Fleetwood Hesketh 122-1 (Net Score 317) Mersey Rose 80-1 (Net Score 275) Fleetwood Hesketh on by 42 runs Mersey Rose's softball team took on Fleetwood Hesketh at Sea Cop on Tuesday evening and ended up on the losing side despite a very positive performance.
Marcus-Alejandro Keam made his debut for Rose. Regular captain Anna Page, recovering from injury, umpired at square leg while daughter Heidi stepped in (with a little parental help). Heidi won the toss and opted to field first.
That seemed a good decision especially when, in the second over, David Crossley took his first wicket of the season courtesy of a stumping by Andi Page. Despite some excellent good bowling, especially from Heidi Page, Amy Parsons and Gail Rose, Mersey Rose couldn't find a second wicket and some attacking strokeplay from the Foxes (Zoe, Jenna and Margaret being the star performers) helped to take their score to 122 for 1 from 15 overs - a net score of 317.
The Foxes did not finish as league runners-up for nothing!
In reply, Andi Page hit the first ball to the boundary with a straight drive and this set the tone for the innings. Everyone tried to play positive shots and the second pair of Amy Parsons and Gail Rose played intelligently as they attempted to chase down the target. Unfortunately Amy edged behind to the keeper when attempting a hook shot but that was the only wicket Rose lost and otherwise they never looked in much trouble. David Crossley and Aaron McKenna also shared a useful partnership while Marcus-Alejandro Kean marked his first game for the club with a couple of impressive boundaries.
It wasn't enough to reach the formidable target but the performance was testament to ongoing improvement.
